Forget being charitable in New York City. It’s been banned!
The Bloomberg administration is now taking the term “food police” to new depths, blocking food donations to all government-run facilities that serve the city’s homeless.
In conjunction with a mayoral task force and the Health Department, the Department of Homeless Services recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters. Since DHS can’t assess the nutritional content of donated food, shelters have to turn away good Samaritans.
Well, in their defense, the last thing a homeless person needs is a slice of peach cobbler that hasn’t been thoroughly examined for a calorie count before they go back out on the street and sleep in a FREAKING BOX!
No, it’s better to loot the citizen of New York of their hard earned money in order to provide government approved mystery meat than it is to have the same citizen donate food out of the goodness of their heart.
It gets worse:
DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond says the ban on food donations is consistent with Mayor Bloomberg’s emphasis on improving nutrition for all New Yorkers. A new interagency document controls what can be served at facilities — dictating serving sizes as well as salt, fat and calorie contents, plus fiber minimums and condiment recommendations.
Mayor Bloomberg sees the role of government as being the supreme power of the individual’s diet.
The man is a tyrant. Why anyone would vote for him is beyond my understanding.

This is amazing. They are worried about the salt content of food that is being served to the homeless. Someone needs to reassess their priorities.
I for one say God bless Mayor Bloomburger for being brave enough to take a stand and insure that NYC’s homeless are getting enough fiber. I think we can all agree there’s nothing worse than an army constipated homeless dudes hogging up the bathroom stalls at Barnes & Noble.
or pooping on Cop cars. Ahhhh wrong group. Well I guess OWS’s could have hired a homeless guy to doodoo on a police car.
As long as Bloomberg is mayor and the New York Times still exists…New York is doomed, they just don’t know it.
Condiment recommendations? Seriously? So what are they going to do, ban yellow mustard on a pastrami-on-rye?
And here I thought Michigan was screwed up…..
Yep, they’re trying. Abilene, TX, refused a federal grant for their nursing homes recently because there were new stipulations in it…no condiments and no holiday meals. http://www.reporternews.com/news/2011/oct/27/city-of-abilene-declines-grant-for-senior-meal/?comments_id=298259
