Mitt Picks Paul Ryan for Vice President (With Preview of VP Debate)

Last night I went to bed with only rumors.

This morning it’s official: Paul Ryan is Mitt Romney’s choice for Vice President:

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Congressman Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate, the Romney campaign confirmed on Saturday.

“Mitt’s choice for VP is Paul Ryan. Spread the word about America’s comeback team,” a Romney campaign mobile phone application said, confirming widespread reports he had selected the 42-year-old Wisconsin lawmaker who chairs the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee.

Romney was expected to introduce Ryan at the retired battleship USS Wisconsin – coincidentally named for Ryan’s home state – in Norfolk, Virginia, at about 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT) Saturday.

As an added service to the All American Reader, I was able to procure a preview of what a Ryan v. Biden debate would look like:

Take a guess which one is Ryan.

As much as I hate to admit it, I’m going to say Ryan is the one on the bottom. This was not a good choice for Romney. Ryan carries a lot of baggage from his budget plan that Romney, who is already weak, is now forced to shoulder. As soon as I heard this on the news, my mind immediately went to Randy Quade in the stands of Major League 2 – hat turned inside out and yelling that it’s all over.
    But I guess there’s always 2016.

They’re gonna stop the debates because Biden’s getting beat so badly?

If Romney and Ryan play to their potential, they win. Mitt’s campaign has to be one about positive ideas and action, not trying not to lose. The Ryan pick is an excellent first step.

Creative Minority makes an excellent point: “Mitt Romney keeps the social conservatives on board and perhaps even enthuses them a bit by selecting about as solid a social conservative as he could possibly have picked and that naturally turns the media discussion to the ECONOMY!

He selected a 100% pro-life pro-family veep and all anyone can talk about is the economy. That, my friends, is called WINNING!”

Make no mistake, Paul Ryan can help Mitt Romney win this election. There is something in this selection that a lot of people are missing, however. A comment left at my blog by a fellow blogger sums it up nicely.

Romney might have picked someone who would have been more helpful in the campaign to get himself elected; but he picked someone who will be a great asset if he is elected.

That is exactly how I feel. Paul Ryan may be on the road to becoming the most influential Vice-President of all time.

In the hoopla of a decision finally being made, a few things we should keep in mind…

“Ryan’s voting record shows a robust support of big-spending programs to enlarge the role of the federal government, especially when they are promoted by a Republican in the White House. Ryan voted for all of the big-ticket, budget-busting items of the administration of President George W. Bush, including the No Child Left Behind Act and the prescription drug benefit known as Medicare Part D, often described as the largest expansion of the welfare state since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. Ryan voted to create the new Department of Homeland Security, including the Transportation Security Administration that has harassed air travelers, while making aircraft safe from shoes, belt buckles and grandma’s knitting needles. He voted for the PATRIOT Act, giving government enhanced powers for warrantless snooping into the lives of American citizens as well as foreign nationals. Ryan voted for the Troubled Assets Relief Program that bailed out the “too big to fail” financial institutions and inspired the Tea Party rebellion against big government and “crony capitalism.” He backed the auto bailout that turned GM into “Government Motors.”

“Even more troubling is Ryan’s vote last December in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act. The legislation included a provision authorizing the President to use the military to arrest suspected terrorists, including American citizens apprehended in the United States, and hold them indefinitely, without charges and without trial, in clear violation of due process rights guaranteed by the Constitution. This year Ryan voted against an amendment to remove that provision from the law.”

Ron Paul he’s NOT! Not even a distant cousin.
